Hello, World!

His story

A life lit by learning.

From the courts of Canouan to 13 seasons in the NBA, and from the classroom to the communities he serves, Adonal Foyle’s story is proof that talent opens the door and education keeps it open.

Four chapters

Island. Court. Classroom. Community.

Each chapter of his life added a new kind of light, and each one led back to the same purpose: lifting the next generation.

01

The Island

Adonal was born on Canouan, a small island in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and raised in a fishing village by his mother and grandmother. His mother’s steady belief in him shaped his character.

  • Rode a donkey to school
  • Studied by kerosene lamp after dark
  • Learned the game on the island’s courts
02

The Court

He moved to the United States at 15 for his education. At Colgate University he became the school’s all time leading rebounder and set the NCAA record for career blocked shots.

  • 8th overall pick, 1997 NBA Draft, Golden State Warriors
  • 13 NBA seasons with Golden State, Orlando and Memphis
  • Known for defense, basketball IQ, leadership and humility
03

The Classroom

Even at the height of his career, Adonal never stopped studying. He graduated magna cum laude in history from Colgate and later earned an MBA. Then he started writing.

  • B.A. in History, magna cum laude, Colgate University
  • MA and MBA
  • Author of eight books for kids, athletes and leaders
04

The Community

While still playing, he founded Democracy Matters. A few years later he started the Kerosene Lamp Foundation, named for the light he studied by. Today he coaches, speaks, writes, hosts Foyle’s Forum and develops housing in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

  • Founded Democracy Matters in 2001
  • Founded the Kerosene Lamp Foundation in 2005
  • Inducted into the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame
What he lives by

Three words he keeps coming back to.

01

Dream big.

A boy from an island of fewer than two thousand people can play in the NBA. Start there and work backward.

02

Work hard.

Talent gets noticed. Discipline, study and preparation are what make it last, on the court and off it.

03

Give back.

Success is measured by how many lives you lift along the way. The lamp is meant to be passed on.

Today

Still teaching the game.

Adonal works with athletes, executives and organizations on leadership, mindset and life after sports. He speaks around the world, moderates conversations with leaders, and keeps building programs for young people in the Caribbean and the United States.
