Tall Tales Reading Program
|
Adonal has always been an advocate of helping others. Throughout his entire career, he has worked relentlessly to provide help to those who need it most.
In 2003, he opened the Adonal Foyle Reading and Learning Center back in his native home of Canouan, which was the first learning center to open internationally under the NBA's "Read to Achieve" program.
He has also participated in the "Making the Grade" program, a comprehensive program that serves as a tool to prevent middle school children from dropping out of school when they reach high school.
He has held charity dinners at his home in the Bay Area to raise money for AIDS research and makes all the arrangements for the dinners himself, including the recruitment of local businesses to attend and donate towards the cause.
Along with his continued work in the "NBA Cares" program, Adonal also donates his own time to help raise money for worthy causes.
In 2006, Adonal created the The Kerosene Lamp Foundation Inc. a non-profit organization that will work to develop new academic and athletic programs for today's youth.

Adonal writes:
"Being a professional athlete comes with a tremendous civic responsibility that I take very seriously. Basketball players are idolized by the younger generation, and rather than shirking this power, I feel it is important to accept it and use it for the betterment of society. As an NBA player, I think it is essential that I take advantage of my influence on the younger generation and help them follow their dreams and become successful adults. Thus I find that one of my most important roles is not warding off an opponent on the court, but rather off the court, working within the community to fight off drugs, illiteracy, and ignorance.
Education is a cause that is very near and dear to me. As a young person growing up in the Caribbean, I was fortunate to understand that education would be my ticket to a better life, but many children here in the States are not privy to this knowledge and treat school as a chore that must be endured but not necessarily embraced. I have made it part of my mission to spread my love of knowledge."
