KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent (AP)
Adonal Foyle of the Golden State Warriors was voted St. Vincent and the Grenadines sports personality of 2003.
Foyle beat out 40 other candidates at the ceremony Saturday night in Kingstown. He was also nominated as the Caribbean country's sportsman of the year, but did not make the finals in that category.
Foyle's founded an organization promoting campaign finance reform, and that was one of the main reasons he received the award, officials said.
Democracy Matters has a presence on more than 50 college campuses and it organizes petition campaigns, voter registration drives and educational seminars, according to Foyle's Web site.
Foyle, from the tiny St. Vincent island of Canouan, made his NBA debut in 1997.
Foyle's sister accepted the award.
"I must say this is an honor I would hold dear to my heart for the rest of my life," Foyle said from his home in California. "It comes as a great surprise because I was not expecting this and if the persons back in St. Vincent and the Grenadines think that I deserved this then I must say how grateful I am to have been so highly thought of."
Foyle played at Colgate, where he became the university's career leading rebounder (1,103) and second-leading scorer (1,776 points).
