NBA PRESS RELEASE

GOLDEN STATE"S ADONAL FOYLE HONORED WITH NBA COMMUNITY ASSIST AWARD

Warriors center honored for his community outreach in the month of January

New York, February 19 - Golden State Warriors center Adonal Foyle has been selected to receive the NBA Community Assist Award for his community outreach during the month of January. Foyle has been active in the community since joining the league in 1997. Since being selected in the first round of the 1997 draft, he has made an immediate impact in the Bay Area, as evidenced by his many activities throughout the month of January.

Foyle tipped-off January by serving as a panelist as part of the Greenlining Institute's ninth annual Minority Economic Development Conference, which was headlined by keynote speaker Alan Greenspan, chairman of the Federal Reserve. Taking part in a panel of economic and political leaders, Foyle discussed the need for campaign finance reform. The Greenlining Institute works to promote low-income and minority economic development and increase minority community participation in policy making. The Institute has also awarded Foyle its most prestigious honor, the Social Change Agent Award for his work on campaign finance reform.

On January 12, Foyle hosted a charitable reception at his home in Oakland to raise funds for Democracy Matters. Foyle founded Democracy Matters in 2001 to help bring the enthusiasm, energy and idealism of students into the national discussion of money in politics. Through his program, Democracy Matters students raise awareness of the problem of private money dominating election campaigns on college campuses throughout America. Students work with University faculty to weave the issue of money and politics into the classroom. Students also mobilize on campus, establish coalitions between community groups and students and oversee community outreach programs such as presentations to local high schools.

"I am very excited and honored to be selected as the NBA's Community Assist Award recipient this month," said Foyle. "I think it is part of my moral responsibility to give back to the community and an obligation that I have - and embrace - as a professional athlete. I take this responsibility very seriously and will continue to do so for the remainder of my career and beyond."

Also in the month of January, The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Ex-Teachers Association recognized him for his substantial accomplishments, on- and off-the-court, at its 19th anniversary celebration luncheon in New York. As part of the Warriors Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on January 21, Adonal appeared in a special PSA featuring a poem about Dr. King which he had written in college.

The launch of Democracy Matters reflects Foyle's tireless commitment to social change. His dedication to community service has already earned him the Mayor of San Francisco's 1998 Sports Hero Award for his "commitment to the underprivileged children of the city of San Francisco." In 1997, the American Heart Association named him "Athlete With A Heart". Democracy Matters is part of his deep commitment to improving the society in which he finds himself. In addition to funding Democracy Matters, Foyle will serve as Democracy Matters' President and Chairman of the Board. Named this season to the newly created Warriors All-Star Reading Team, Foyle has actively participated in the "Tall Tales" Reading Program since his rookie season, often sharing stories from his homeland which he has written himself. In October he co-hosted the "Tall Tales" Reading Camp at the San Leandro Boys & Girls Club as part of the NBA's Read to Achieve Week.

As the January Community Assist Award winner, Foyle will receive a $5,000 donation from the NBA to the charity of his choice.

Each month, all 29 NBA teams nominate a player for the Community Assist Award, other nominees for January included Miami's Brian Grant, Portland's Damon Stoudamire, Charlotte's David Wesley, Toronto's Tracy Murray, Memphis" Nick Anderson and the Los Angeles Clippers Elton Brand.

The NBA, its teams and players are committed to programs that improve the quality of life for all people and has created and implemented programs that address important social issues, with a special emphasis on reading and on-line literacy initiatives for children. The NBA and its 29 teams continue to make a difference in North America through its Read to Achieve Program, donations to charities and the implementation of community outreach initiatives, and through the production and airing of public service announcements.
