New Warriors VP: Chris Mullin
The Warriors made some headlines about a month ago when they announced that Chris Mullin was going to take over as the Vice-President of Basketball Operations in place of Garry St. Jean. Chris has been an amazing part of the Warriors family for many, many years. He brought some of the best basketball that people are still talking about in the Bay Area. I believe the term back then was Run TMC.' So, he's played an enormous role within the Warriors organization. And certainly that has contributed to the enjoyment of basketball for a lot of fans here. It's not a surprise that he's going to bring this kind of knowledge to the boardroom.
I think there's been a recent trend in the NBA where a lot of the former players of the recent past are coming back to the league and straight into the boardroom to make decisions and lead the team. There's Joe Dumars in Detroit, Larry Bird in Indiana and Isiah Thomas in New York. These guys are bringing in a unique gift and insight to their players. They've played this game and now they know how to open lines of communications between themselves and players. Not only that, they can also create an environment that can enhance success. So, I think it could potentially be a big plus to bring in people who know the game and who has been playing this game for a long time. I'm hoping Mully will be very successful in his new role. He certainly has unique skills and hopefully will put them into good use and really move this team into the right direction.
For him, it's going to be a work-in-progress like anything else. People are questioning him because he has no front office experience. It's almost like a Catch-22. They say you need the experience before you step into the position. At the same time, you have to start somewhere. You need the experience to learn to get it right. I have no doubt about Mully's basketball instinct. His assistants are going to be very important because they're going to take on the numbers end of it, freeing him up to focus on structuring the team and creating an environment in which success can happen.
One of the good things about a person like Mully is that he won't pull his punches. He'll tell it to you like it is. And that's a good thing. You may think his words harsh, but I think you'll eventually understand his point. He will tell you if you do something right, and he'll tell you if you do something wrong. And that's the kind of leadership that is rare in this world where people are too afraid to be critical. And I think he will be critical – at least I hope he will be critical, because I think that skill will be vital to his success as well as that of the Warriors organization.
