Welcome to the part of my website created to give fans a behind the scenes look at life as a professional basketball player. This page will be constantly updated to reflect my thoughts on the coach, practice, the team, and of course the game itself.
No Jameer, No Time to Worry
Our point-guard, Jameer Nelson, was on his way to the best season of his career. He was named to his first All-Star Game and will probably receive a lot of votes for Most Improved Player. He has done everything he could to be considered one of the best point guards in the league. I've only known him well for the past year, but he's grown so much as a player and I couldn't be more proud of him. But just before the All-Star Break, we lost Jameer to a season-ending injury.
We have to face facts - Jameer is done for the year. Even if he opts not to have surgery, it will be a long road back to recovery. He wasn't only the guy who made things happen, he was the guy whom our teammates looked to run this team. He was the general and the quarterback. Now, we must adjust to him not being there.
I think we've had about six guys play point guard since Jameer left, which speaks highly to how well he had been playing. Having said that, we have to evolve as a team and move forward. We recently acquired Tyronn Lue to help fill the void and we still have Anthony Johnson. So we definitely have guys who can play point guard.
After the All-Star break, the season tends to go by really fast. But even though we're among the top teams in the league, we're going to continue to be hungry. We're going to continue to play with a chip on our shoulders and have the mentality of "We're not satisfied." We still have a whole lot to prove; we hadn't done anything yet. We got past the first round last season. Now, the stakes are higher. We have to want more.
We also have to figure out what our identity is. We need to know what defines us. When we play well, what do we look like on the floor? How was our defense? What did we go to? These are the things a young team has to figure out quickly if it's going to do some damage in the playoffs.
If we do what it takes to win, we'll win. And with Jameer out, we still have two All-Stars on this team. And I am confident that Dwight is the most dominant player in the league. On top of that, we still have a very good bench filled with guys who can do great things.
Will we miss Jameer? Yes. But I think we have the guys in place who can still make this one of the best years in Orlando Magic history.
