10 Random Thoughts

October, 2008

Click here to send a question to Adonal ! >
10 Random Thoughts offers a different way to get into Adonal's head. The questions are randomly selected (without Adonal knowing ahead of time), allowing him to give his true genuine responses about anything from sports to why Pepsi is better than Coke:

1. What was your initial reaction when you saw that Barack Obama had won the presidency?
[Adonal] I thought it was our proudest moment ever. You had this candidate who had really changed the way the political game is played. And he really wanted you to care about politics. For me, I saw so many people get inspired (people who would normally not care about politics). Millions of young people went to the polls and voted. To see how those young voters made the difference, I thought the moment was really transformative. It was a moment we will be able to tell our grandkids about.

2. One month into the season, what is one thing you see different about your team than a year ago?
[Adonal] I would like for us to go into the games a bit more hungry. I think our team is so good in terms of offensive firepower; I would now like to see us have a bit more defensive hunger. Clearly, we're a good team. We're leading our division and we have a chance to be one of the best teams in the conference. But I would like to see us become more desperate. I think we're a better team when we're desperate.

3. How is today's economic crisis personally affecting you?
[Adonal] I've lost a lot of money in the stock market. Luckily, I'm a conservative investor. So I didn't lose a whole lot.

4. You have games on Thanksgiving and on Christmas Day. What is it going to feel like to spend the holidays with your teammates instead of friends and family?
[Adonal] Don't I see them enough already? (laughs). Since playing during the holidays - on national TV - is a testament of how good the team is, I think it's an exciting thing. Knowing that there will be a large audience who will want to watch us, I think that's going to be fun. We'll all be able to find time to spend with our families.

5. Were you ever interested in video games while growing up?
[Adonal] I never really got into video games. I probably played video games once in my entire life. But I'm really excited about learning how to play the Nintendo Wii. It looks like a lot of fun.

6. Having lived in Orlando for more than a year, have you had a chance to visit Disneyworld?
[Adonal] I've had a chance to visit Disneyworld a few times. It's a beautiful place. It's full of kids of all ages. It's like a big dollhouse designed for people who just want to enjoy themselves to the fullest.

7. Team A is leading Team B by three points. Team B has the ball with 12 seconds left. There have been a lot of games where Team A would allow Team B to run out the clock until the final seconds and attempt a three-pointer to tie the game. Why don't more coaches just commit a foul so that Team B gets two free throws instead of a chance at a three-pointer?
[Adonal] A lot of coaches believe that it's always going to be tough to make a shot (two or three pointer) with time running out. And they believe that the player with the ball will always have a tough time making such a shot. But I have learned in recent years that it's possible to be burned by that shot. On past teams, we've lost a handful times when that situation occurred. I would much rather commit the foul and put the player on the line instead of risking a chance for them to tie the game on a three.

8. What is Christmas like at your home island of Canouan?
[Adonal] Christmas on the island is really simple. Growing up, we didn't have a lot of money. So there weren't a lot of presents. On Christmas Day, we would go to church at midnight. Then, we would serenade in front of people's homes. People would come out of their homes and give us gifts. A lot of people cooked, too. And the day was spent going from house to house, eating, drinking and just having a good time. Like I said, we didn't have a lot of presents. So we would just eat and drink all day.

9. If you could have only one meal for the rest of your life, what would that be?
[Adonal] I would say curry goat with rice and peas.

10. What is your fondest childhood memory?
[Adonal] I remember sitting on the beach with some friends in the middle of the night in front of a bonfire under the moonlight. We told each other scary stories. We would jump into the ocean or play hide and seek. It was a fun time where we just really enjoyed the simplicity of life on an island. Those are the types of memories that I will remember forever.
